Issue 50: Comic Creator Block Party, SF Trans Film Fest, & Princesses on NetGalley!
Leaf blowers are the scourge of humankind!
Or at least Los Angeles.
…or at least the vicinity directly around our apartment.
NEW STUFF
We will officially be at Revenge Of’s Comic Creator Block Party again this weekend! It’s a free event at Revenge Of Comics and Pinball in Los Angeles, put on by Patton Oswalt and Jordan Blum. And so many comic creators are going to be there!

We’re signing in the 5-6 pm block, and will have copies of Begin Transmission: The Trans Allegories of The Matrix, Just Another Summer, and the Star Trek Voyager: Homecoming trade paperback! We’ll also have a few of our remaining complete sets of Voyager Homecoming individual issues! And stickers! Come see us!
It’s a really great, fun atmosphere that’s really focused on creators and fans. You’ll have a great time!

And then the very next weekend, Nov. 14, we’ll be in San Francisco at the Long Away screening in the San Francisco Trans Film Fest's Speculative Fiction block of shorts, at the Roxie Theater, 3117 16th St. We have a Q&A with the audience after the screening!
Get tickets here! Join us!

Another of the interviews we did at SDCC finally made it up! This one is a video interview with Comics Online about Voyager Homecoming, conducted at the IDW booth on the show floor!
If you remember a little while back, Tilly was on the Forgotten Video Store podcast, reminiscing about a movie that doesn’t actually exist. This week it was Susan’s turn, for a movie called STR8, set in a world where queer people are the norm and straight people are the minority!
We’ve got the final galley for Princesses of the DC Universe! It’s so beautiful and reads so good as a complete book. It’s up on Edelweiss and Net Galley. If you have an account on either one of those, you can request a copy to review! DC handles approvals for who gets the galley and who doesn’t, and we’ve heard they can be stingy about it, but if you’ve got an account it’s worth a try!

Our first review on Net Galley was lovely, and is the first review of any kind the book has gotten!

Remember that we’ve got stickers and copies of all of our books at comics on Tilly’s ko-fi shop! Stop by and grab some signed stuff whydonctcha!
And here’s the pre-order link for our middle-grade sci-fi superhero adventure comedy, Princesses of the DC Universe! Out March 2, 2027!

WHAT WE’RE WORKING ON
We’re slowly easing back into the writing work.
Pilot revisions continue! We had lunch with a lovely friend last week, and she was really intrigued by it and wants to read it, so that’s spurring us along to try and get it ready for outside eyes hopefully by the end of November.
We got rejected from a comic anthology we submitted to, but then immediately found another anthology that the same short would fit into, so it’s now submitted to those folks.
Still waiting to hear back on pitches in at two different publishers, and to hear back from the editor at a third publisher (who’d put us up for a licensed book, which is still a mystery to us).
Tilly’s project with Lilly Wachowski is still moving along. It’s presently in a detail-refinement stage, and then it’ll progress into some kind of production, once it’s decided how everyone wants to move forward with it.
And people keep asking us if we’re going to make another short film, and we’d really love to! But we haven’t been able to get anywhere with planning it yet. It’s on the list of 128625678 things we have to work on.
TRANS TUESDAY UPDATE
Okay, let’s get you caught up since the last newsletter update on these a month ago!
We finished off the series on TERFs with TERFS 3: NO ETHICAL CONSUMPTION OF HARRY POTTER, which is exactly what it says on the tin. When every dollar JK Rowling makes from the franchise, in any form, is used to strip trans people of rights, there is no ethical way to be a fan of that franchise – at least not if you truly care about trans people. This one’s also full of quotes from people in Hollywood on the subject.

Then we began another three-part series on TRANS ALLEGORIES IN POPULAR MUSIC. Because, surprise, trans people are human beings! And that means that art made by humans, even cisgender ones, can speak to the trans experience in ways you maybe never realized. We’re all more alike than not, and this is a great way to illustrate that.
You’ll get context, explanation, and songs ranging from 1-3 on Tilly’s Transiness Scale of 1-10, in part 1.

Part 2 takes you from the 4s up through the 7s, as the songs get ever more trans!

And part 3 takes you from the 8s to the 10s, and if you’ve got a heart left in your chest, these might just explode it.

RECOMMENDATIONS

This show is such a calming presence in our lives right now. We’ve taken to calling it “the contemplative elf show.” It’s about an elven mage who’s been alive for a thousand years, and what happens to her after the big hero’s journey you expect most fantasy stories to be.
It’s really charming, and funny, and avoids most of the kind of sexism that shows up all too often in anime. And even when there’s action, it just somehow… never makes us tense? We don’t mean that in a bad way, like it’s failing to do what it should. It just does exactly what it intends to, which is being a rather soothing show about an elf who lives longer than everyone around her, growing and changing over time.
When the world is so tense on its own, this has actually been a really nice way to relax at the end of the night. Check out season one on Netflix.
THE DIRTBAG DISPATCH
We’ve decided to leave this section named after our dirtbag, even though he’s no longer with us. Although actually he might kind of still be…
He used to scratch at Susan’s dresser and our wardrobe in the middle of the night to wake us up, and now Izzy’s doing it? Somehow? She never ever did that before.
She also recently came and sat in the spot exactly where Henry used to, when he’d stare at Susan because he wanted her to do… something. And she then stared at Susan the exact same way.
It’s like ghost Henry is whispering in her ear, “Hey kid…” and telling her to do stuff to annoy us. Because if there was ever a cat who would not let death stop him from causing us problems, it’s Dirtbag Henry. <3
Anyway, here’s a video of one of Izzy’s non Henry-sponsored favorite things… spinning around in Tilly’s desk chair. It’s not only humans who think twirling around in these is a good time!
WHAT’S IN THE BIG TIME?
Big Time issue 50 has the first page of a sci-fi horror comic short called Singularity… that was never published and has never been seen before! Anywhere! By anyone! Don’t you want to read it?!
Sign up for it at birdguestbroadcast.com and help us pay rent and eat food and stuff, it’s a mere five bucks a month!
THE END
The newsletter is done!
This is exciting, because now you can go do something else.
And so can we.
