Issue 38: Panel video, workshops, and a film fest nomination!
It’s May!
Wait, it’s May? Already?
Who authorized this?!
NEW STUFF
We got the video footage in from the panel discussion and Q&A that followed the screening of Long Away at WonderCon in March! And it’s up now for everyone to see. We had a really great discussion, which includes some stuff we previously only mentioned during the panel at our cast and crew screening, so it’s likely all very new to you!
If you haven’t been able to see Long Away yet, definitely hold off on watching this for now! There are spoilers, as it directly followed a screening. And we’d prefer that you approach the film on its own terms first. So if you’ve not been able to see it yet, keep an eye out for future festival appearances!
We’ve never had a panel that was professionally shot like this before, it’s really cool! We also got access to several hundred photos that the official WonderCon photographer took, but we still have to finish the paperwork and sign the release to be able to use them.
We’ll drop some of our faves into a future newsletter when we’ve got that all settled! And speaking of festival appearances…

Long Away will screen (again!) in the FP Arts Short Film Fest in Scotland! It previously screened there as part of their ongoing monthly screenings, and has now advanced to be an official nominee for their annual awards.
The festival runs from June 25-27, and if you attend you also get to vote for the audience award! If you’re in the UK and want to check it out, get tickets here!

Our first Zoom writing workshop on Pilots and Pitching went great! We had a wonderful group, who asked some great questions, and a few even reached out after to say how helpful they found it. Hooray!
We were hoping attendance would be a little higher, but it wasn’t bad. We’ll probably look into doing it again in the future, and possibly also ones on comic writing, animation writing, and maybe a few others. We’re not quite sure if the interest is there to make all of them worth doing, but trying each once might be the only way to find out. We’ll see!
In other news, having video of ourselves from the Robo Waitress Assassins live show means we can now bless you all with things like this gif.

As we do now have said footage, stay tuned as we hope to have it up for folks to watch again soon.
Annnnd please remember that preorders make or break books, and right now you can preorder both books that we have coming out in August!
Star Trek Voyager: Homecoming, the complete series collected in a trade paperback!
And our YA queer trans romcom, Just Another Summer, available in paperback and hardcover!

WHAT WE’RE WORKING ON
Tilly’s trying to put together an overly ambitious big project with a big name you have definitely heard before, but it’s all super-early stages still, so no peeks for you yet.
Things have stabilized a little for us in terms of finances (after sixteen months of… not that), so we’ll probably soon get to scripting the fourth and final issue of a comic we’ve been trying to get completed since 2019. There have been so many delays and problems, none of them due to anyone involved. Shit just happens, and a whole lotta shit has happened.
In any case, hopefully we’ll get that going and off to the artist before too long, and once the art’s done (which will likely take several months), we’ll have to figure out what the heck we’re going to do with it. Every publisher we’ve pitched it to has passed, but it’s been a while since we pitched it, so … who knows.
We also might get started on the script for our next short film, though we’ll have to decide for certain what that will be. We think we know! But maybe we don’t?
We’ll see!
We’re very available at the moment, so if you know someone hiring writers, send them our way, wouldja please?
TRANS TUESDAY UPDATE
We tackled a really tough topic over the past couple of weeks, namely CHASERS AND THE FETISHIZATION OF TRANS WOMEN.
The first installment includes a look into what it’s like for trans women on the internet (it’s awful), and is likely even worse than you imagine.

The second part shows you how the sexual harassment of trans women is tied right in, and is directly part of, the present anti-trans “movement”… which is in no way organic, and most people do not support it. It’s been astroturfed as part of a larger attack on trans society partially because the people doing it want to sexually subjugate trans women… and those people are billionaire white cisgender heterosexual men.
We wish we were joking. But it’s true, and we’ve got all the receipts. You need to know.

RECOMMENDATIONS

The Justice League Intergalactic Special one-shot is so much fun, just a classic comic book rollicking space adventure.
Even better, it’s written by two trans women, Jadzia Axelrod and Nicole Maines, and it stars two trans women superheroes, Galaxy and Dreamer! This is probably the first time either of those things has happened.
It’s a really fun book with some great character moments, and it sets up the Dream Girls limited series releasing every week this June.
If you love superheroes, sci-fi, and trans rep, this is the book for you.
THE DIRTBAG DISPATCH
Izzy is usually not very interested in boxes, beyond trying to rip off pieces of cardboard to chew on.
But this one was so good, apparently. It’s really unusual for her to hop in and get box-happy, but when it hits, it hits. Apparently.

Henry asked us to be sure you’ve seen his toe beans, because they’re very good beans.
WHAT’S IN THE BIG TIME?
Big Time issue 38 talks about adapting a story from one medium to another, and how what’s important is staying true to the heart of what you’re adapting, even if details need to change. There’s also more exclusive character concept art from Robo Waitress Assassins!
Sign up for it at birdguestbroadcast.com and help us pay rent and eat food and stuff!
THE END
Still no one has hired us to make Robo Waitress Assassins.
Why not?
This feels unacceptable tbh.
